Confidentiality & Privacy Policy
The relationship between a client and a therapist is privileged one and information cannot be disclosed without written permission. I am bound by my American Association for Marriage and Family Code of Ethics which includes Standard II dedicated to client confidentiality.
Exceptions include:
- Suspected child, dependent adult, or elder abuse or neglect for which I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately. North Carolina is a mandated reporter state (NCGS 7B-301).
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
- If a client intends to harm themselves, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. However, when necessary I will take further measures without their permission that are provided to me by law in order to ensure their safety.
- I am also required to abide by a Judge's orders to release records (not a subpoena).
- I will also release records if everyone in the client record signs a release of information. The requirement of the signature of everyone who is participating in therapy is key to note for couples and families.
